The Experience

The Northern region of Kenya also known as the Northern frontier comprises of multiple counties namely isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana and Samburu. These counties are rich in both geographical features, culture and amazing fauna and flora. The northern touristic circuit comprises of the following attractions. Samburu National Reserve, Buffalo Springs &Shaba game reserve. Beyond the wildlife, Northen kenya offers offthe beaten track experience dubbed The Northern Kenya Desert Expedition. This is an adventurous journey through some of Kenya’s most remote and dramatic landscapes. The expedition begins in Marsabit National Park, a forested volcanic oasis rising from the desert, home to elephants, buffaloes, birdlife, and the scenic Lake Paradise. It continues to the striking Kalacha Sand Dunes and North Horr Dunes, where vast golden sands, desert winds, and nomadic cultures create a truly otherworldly experience. The journey culminates at Loiyangalani, a tranquil lakeside town on the shores of Lake Turkana, renowned for its volcanic scenery, hot springs, vibrant cultural diversity, and breathtaking sunsets. This expedition offers a rare blend of desert adventure, wildlife, landscapes, and rich indigenous cultures in Kenya’s northern frontier.

Samburu Game Reserve

Samburu Game Reserve

Located in the banks of ewaso nyiro river, Samburu national reserve is one of favorite tourists’ destination north of the equator. The reserve is part of the three interconnecting Samburu eco system. Divided by ewaso nyiro river and county boundaries, Samburu national reserve borders Buffalo springs to the south and Shaba national reserve to the east. Samburu is home to the “special five” unique animals found in that region exclusively. Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe and long neck gerenuk are the special five of Samburu. Samburu national reserve was established in 1985 and is under the management of Samburu County Government. Accessibility: The park can be accessed by road and air via Nanyuki-Isiolo highway or through Kalama airstrip and sopa airstrips

Game Viewing Buffalo Springs

Size:131 sq kms Buffalo springs national reserve is one of the protected areas which form the entire Samburu reserve. Separated by Ewaso nyiro river, buffalo springs share same ecosystem as Samburu reserve with the only difference is the revenue collector. Buffalo springs is managed by Isiolo county government. It is important to note that buffalo springs was established in 1948 as Samburu-Isiolo reserve however, the boundaries were re drawn in 1985. It derives its name from the ever-wet springs frequented by buffalos. Accessibility: The park can be accessed by road and by air via Isiolo- Nanyuki highway or by Air through Buffalo springs airstrip or kalama airstrip

Shaba Game reserve

Shaba Game reserve

Size: 239 sq kms Located close to Samburu national reserve and Buffalo springs, Shaba is one of the Samburu and accounts for one of the least visited parts of the Samburu probably due to inter community conflicts within the area. Shaba offers all the attractions the other Samburu offer. Established in 1974 and is under the management of Isiolo county government.

Scenic Expeditions: Lake Turkana & Loiyangalani

Lake Turkana, also known as Lake Rudolf is Kenya’s northern most alkaline lakes in the rift valley. Stretching over 300 kms long all the way to Ethiopian border, Lake Turkana is a unique lake in that it is the world’s largest desert lake and has no outlet The lake supports tourism activities and also forms an economic capital to fishermen along the shores. Apart from one of the longest shorelines, lake Turkana is dotted with beautiful islands and dormant craters such as naboyatum.

Off the beaten track/Cradle of Mankind Sibiloi N. Park

Referred to as “The Cradle of Mankind”,Sibiloi National Park was solely created to protect and preserve the many astounding hominoid fossils discoveries in that region. This is where evidence of the first man and the early tools ma used is found. Situated in the Northeastern shores of lake Turkana the park also acts as a breeding ground for hippopotamus. The park was established in 1973 by the national government. Accessibility: Can be accessed by road from loiyangalani town in the south eastern shores of lake Turkana
